US Ambassador Eric Garcetti Talks About India-US Friendship and Quad Summit
New York [US], September 24: The United States views India as a ‘friend and partner,’ not as a counterbalance to any other country, according to US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti. He emphasized that both nations share principles about borders, sovereignty, and the rule of law.
In an interview, Garcetti highlighted that the US has supported India during border conflicts and backs India’s diplomatic interactions with China. He stated, ‘We see India as a friend and a partner, not a counterbalance. We share principles about borders and sovereignty, about the rule of law. We’ve stood with India on the border when there’s been conflicts.’
Garcetti also mentioned that the US wants countries to have choices and avoid debt traps, promoting democracies and free-market economies. He added, ‘We want to calm the waters when it comes to relations with China.’
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently noted that 75% of disengagement issues with China have been resolved, but some challenges remain. Garcetti praised the close friendship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden, describing Biden as the ‘most pro-Indian president in US history.’
Garcetti also spoke about the Quad, a group consisting of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. He called it a ‘powerful place’ to set a vision and find solutions in the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad Leaders’ Summit was recently hosted by President Biden in Wilmington, Delaware, where leaders committed to working with Pacific island countries and addressing global challenges.
During a bilateral meeting, President Biden affirmed support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council. The summit also served as a ‘farewell’ for both President Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida before they step down from office.
