US Ambassador Eric Garcetti and Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge Discuss Trade and Technology Ties
New Delhi [India], September 20: Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge and US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti met to discuss ways to enhance trade relations between Karnataka and the United States. The meeting took place at Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi.
Proposed Sister City Corridors
Minister Kharge proposed creating sister city corridors between Bengaluru and San Francisco, focusing on their shared strengths in innovation and entrepreneurship. This would help integrate innovations from San Francisco into Karnataka and provide opportunities for Karnataka’s emerging enterprises to access US markets.
Skill Corridor and Market Access
They also discussed establishing a skill corridor, particularly in fintech, AI, and semiconductor manufacturing with Austin. Enhancing market access programs was another key topic, aiming to boost economic, business, and technological investments, and foster cultural exchanges in commerce, health, education, and technology.
US Consulate in Bengaluru
Minister Kharge informed reporters that Ambassador Garcetti assured him that steps would be taken to establish a US consulate in Bengaluru. This would create job opportunities for Kannadigas and make it easier for students from Karnataka and South India to get visas. The consulate would also streamline access to visas, passports, and other consular services, and support the large American expatriate community in the city.
Technological and Economic Benefits
Ambassador Garcetti highlighted Karnataka’s status as the world’s fourth-largest technology hub and Bengaluru’s fifth-place ranking globally in the AI sector. He emphasized Karnataka’s leadership in biotechnology, aerospace, and defense, making it an ideal destination for investment and business. The envoy praised Karnataka’s human resources as a global model, noting that the consulate’s establishment would benefit both the US and India.
Minister Kharge also conveyed messages from the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to the US Ambassador about the importance of establishing the consulate in Bengaluru.
