The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has added 29 Chinese companies to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) Entity List. This action is part of the US government's ongoing efforts to combat forced labor in global supply chains, particularly in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.
The UFLPA, effective since 2022, aims to prevent the importation of goods produced using forced labor, especially from regions linked to human rights abuses. DHS Secretary Alejandro N Mayorkas emphasized the US's commitment to enforcing the act and protecting US markets from exploitation.
The newly listed companies are primarily involved in agriculture, manufacturing, and electronics. They are suspected of sourcing materials from Xinjiang or collaborating with the Chinese government to exploit Uyghur labor. Notable companies include Tianjin Tianwei Food Co and Xinjiang Zhonghe Co.
US Customs and Border Protection will presume goods from these companies are made with forced labor unless proven otherwise. This initiative aligns with the Biden administration's commitment to human rights and ethical sourcing. Since the UFLPA's enactment, over 10,000 shipments have been reviewed, valued at more than USD 3.6 billion.
Robert Silvers, Under Secretary for Policy, stressed the importance of industry accountability and ethical practices. The expansion of the UFLPA Entity List highlights the US government's dedication to eradicating forced labor and promoting responsible global trade.
