Urad Prices Drop Thanks to Government Efforts and Good Rainfall

Urad prices are decreasing due to the Central Government’s proactive measures and favorable rainfall. The Department of Consumer Affairs has helped stabilize prices, benefiting both consumers and farmers.

Increased Sowing Area

The sowing area for Urad has increased significantly, reaching 5.37 lakh hectares as of July 5, compared to 3.67 lakh hectares last year. Major states like Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra are expecting a good Kharif production.

Pre-Registration Initiatives

Pre-registration initiatives by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumer’s Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) are preparing farmers for the Kharif sowing season. In Madhya Pradesh alone, 8,487 Urad farmers have registered, with substantial participation in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.

Price Support Scheme

The ongoing procurement of summer Urad under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) by NAFED and NCCF is further stabilizing the market. Wholesale prices of Urad have seen a week-on-week decline of 3.12% in Indore and 1.08% in Delhi as of July 6. The landed prices of imported Urad are also on a declining trend.
