UP Ministers and Leaders Debate Changes to Waqf Board Act

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, BJP leaders have welcomed proposed changes to the Waqf Board Act that aim to limit the board’s power. UP Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar stated that the Waqf Board needs government control, saying, “The Waqf Board functions according to its own rules and regulations. The government has no control over it. So the government is bringing this bill to ensure its role.”

UP Minister Danish Azad Ansari emphasized that Waqf properties should benefit the Muslim community by being used for hospitals, schools, and colleges. He mentioned complaints of land misuse and encroachment, adding, “The Modi and Yogi government believes in the interest of the Muslim community. We must protect their interests.”

Opposition leaders have criticized the proposed amendments. CPI General Secretary D Raja expressed concerns about the lack of public debate and the potential threat to the secular and democratic fabric of society. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of trying to “snatch the rights of Muslim brothers.” RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav argued that the central government is not focused on public welfare but on polarizing politics.

With strong opinions on both sides, the Parliament is expected to have intense discussions when the amendments are introduced.
