University of Karachi Cancels Judge Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri’s Degree Amid Controversy
The University of Karachi has cancelled the degree of Islamabad High Court Judge Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri following recommendations from its Unfair Means Committee. This decision was made after the alleged illegal detention of syndicate member Raiz Ahmed, who had objected to the agenda involving Jahangiri’s degree.
The controversy began when an application sought information on Jahangiri’s LLB degree under the Sindh Transparency Right to Information Act, 2016. The application revealed that Jahangiri, who obtained his LLB degree in 1991 under enrolment number 5968, shared the same enrolment number with another candidate, Imtiaz Ahmed, who enrolled in 1987. Additionally, Jahangiri’s transcript for LLB Part I was issued under a different enrolment number, 7124.
The university deemed the degree invalid, stating that they issue only one enrolment number per degree programme, making it impossible for a candidate to have multiple enrolment numbers. Jahangiri had previously complained to the Supreme Judicial Council about the Chief Justice and alleged interference by the Inter-Services Intelligence in judicial affairs.
