Union Ministers Suresh Gopi and Bhupendra Yadav Discuss Wayanad Landslide Tragedy
Union Minister Suresh Gopi emphasized the need for careful decisions in the rehabilitation of Wayanad after landslides claimed over 300 lives. Speaking in Delhi, he mentioned that he is awaiting a report from the district administration to present to the Prime Minister.
Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav criticized the state government for allowing illegal activities, such as human habitation and mining, which contributed to the disaster. He stated that a committee headed by former Director General of Forests Sanjay Kumar has been formed to investigate.
Rescue operations in Wayanad have entered their seventh day, with 220 bodies recovered and 180 people still missing. South Wayanad DFO, Ajit K Raman, reported that 18 stranded individuals were located and provided with food and provisions. The Indian Air Force has been aiding in the search efforts by airlifting radars from Siachen and Delhi.
Late on Sunday night, the district administration conducted a mass burial for unidentified victims, following interfaith prayers as directed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
