Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar Calls for Investigation into Mamata Banerjee Over Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 25: Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar has called for an investigation into Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with the Kolkata rape-murder case. He suggested that Banerjee’s phone should be seized for inquiry.
Majumdar announced that the BJP’s Mahila Morcha plans to lock the West Bengal Commission for Women office on August 28 due to their inaction in the case. Additionally, the BJP will protest outside District Magistrate offices across all districts on August 29, demanding Banerjee’s resignation.
In related protests, BJP workers held a ‘Mashal March’ in Paschim Medinipur, and women in Siliguri participated in a similar march. Local women and the Indian Secular Front (ISF) also held protests in Bhangore, South 24 Parganas. In Kolkata, Majumdar and BJP workers protested at Shyambazar.
The Bengali television industry held a protest march from Tollygunge to Deshapriya Park, demanding justice for the victim. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh expressed concerns over the progress of the case, noting that only one arrest had been made by the Kolkata Police and questioning the role of the CBI.
Majumdar claimed that the people of West Bengal would topple Banerjee from power over her handling of the case. He stated that the BJP would continue protesting until justice is served.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch announced that they had uncovered substantial evidence in their corruption probe against former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandeep Ghosh. The CBI initiated a corruption investigation against Ghosh by filing an FIR on Saturday.
Parimal Dey, a teacher from Alipurduar, decided to return his Banga Ratna award in protest of the state government’s response to the incident. The Supreme Court ordered the security of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
