Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam MPs Visit Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal led a group of newly elected NDA MPs from Assam to pay a courtesy visit to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the Parliament House on Friday.
Om Birla Re-elected as Speaker
Om Birla, an MP from Kota, was re-elected as the Speaker of Lok Sabha on June 26 for the second consecutive term. The motion was moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and it was adopted by the house through a voice vote.
Election Details
The opposition had fielded K Suresh from the INDIA bloc as their candidate, making the election interesting as it was held for the first time in decades. Traditionally, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected through consensus. However, the NDA, which has a majority with 293 MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha, ensured Om Birla’s re-election.
Parliament Sessions
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on June 24 and will conclude on July 3. The 264th session of Rajya Sabha will commence on June 27 and conclude on July 3. President Murmu is scheduled to address a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament on June 27.
