JNU Hosts ‘Clean and Green’ Campaign

On August 10, 2024, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a ‘Clean and Green’ campaign to promote environmental sustainability and community involvement. The event was organized in collaboration with ISHAN BODH, NISHREYAS, and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Highlights of the Event

The campaign featured a cyclothon with 554 cyclists covering an 11 km route starting from the JNU Administration Office, passing through Nelson Mandela Marg and Vasant Kunj, and ending back at the university campus.

Special Guests

Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Water Transport, was the Chief Guest. He emphasized the importance of environmental preservation and the Government of India’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. He also flagged off the cycle rally.

Other notable attendees included Dilip Saikia, Member of Parliament from Assam, and Lumbaram Choudhary, Member of Parliament from Rajasthan, who praised JNU’s environmental efforts.

Tree Plantation Drive

The event also included a tree plantation drive, with 200 varieties of fruit trees planted across the JNU campus, symbolizing a long-term investment in the environment.

Opening and Closing Ceremonies

JNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit welcomed all guests and participants, reaffirming JNU’s commitment to environmental preservation. Professor Manuradha Chaudhary, Dean of Students, provided an overview of the day’s activities and thanked the sponsors, Deendayal Port Authority and NHPC.

The day concluded with a recognition ceremony where cyclists received medallions, mementos, and T-shirts for their participation.
