Union Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasized the importance of remembering the 1975 Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, calling it a ‘Murder of Constitution.’ His comments came after the government announced that June 25 will be observed as ‘Constitution Murder Day.’

Joshi stated, ‘I want to clear up one thing to the democratic loving people through the media whatever Indira ji did was the Samvidhan ka Hatya (Murder of Constitution). People can’t forget this.’ He added that it is crucial to remember what the Congress party did to the Constitution and public supremacy.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced this decision in a gazette notification, stating that the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, led to gross abuse of power and atrocities against the people of India. The notification emphasized the importance of remembering this day to honor those who suffered and fought against the abuses of power during the Emergency.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also commented on the announcement, stating, ‘On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced.’

Shah added that the government has decided to observe June 25 every year as ‘Constitution Murder Day’ to commemorate the contributions of those who endured the pains of the 1975 Emergency. The day will serve as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made to protect India’s democracy and Constitution.
