Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Discusses Social Security for Platform Workers
On Thursday, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, led a significant meeting in New Delhi with representatives from Platform Workers’ Associations. The meeting was also attended by Union Minister of State for Labour & Employment, Shobha Karandlaje, and senior ministry officials.
The focus of the meeting was to address the challenges faced by platform workers and to discuss the government’s efforts to provide them with essential social security protections. Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the importance of incorporating feedback from Platform Workers’ Associations to create effective social security mechanisms. He praised the associations for their advocacy work and highlighted the government’s commitment to integrating platform workers into existing social security schemes.
Dr. Mandaviya announced the formation of a committee to develop a framework for providing social security and welfare benefits to gig and platform workers. He also discussed the e-Shram portal, which aims to onboard platform workers, and mentioned that the testing phase with major aggregators is complete, with the aggregator module set to launch soon.
Representatives from various states, including Rajasthan, Assam, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Delhi-NCR, participated in the meeting. They provided valuable input to ensure social security coverage for platform workers. The discussions are expected to influence policies that will support platform workers in their professional lives.
