New Delhi, July 8: Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, chaired a review meeting of the power sector in Arunachal Pradesh on Monday in Itanagar. Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Secretary (Power) Pankaj Agarwal, and Chief Secretary Dharmendra were present.

Central Government’s Efforts

Manohar Lal highlighted the Central Government’s continuous efforts for the progress of the North-Eastern region, focusing on better connectivity, improved infrastructure, and welfare. He noted that Arunachal Pradesh has about 38% of India’s total hydropower potential.

Key Discussions

Discussions included the importance of Compensatory Afforestation Land for hydropower projects and simplifying the process for new electricity connections and bills. Manohar Lal suggested options for self-meter reading and bill generation through a mobile app.

Industrial Growth and Employment

He emphasized that quality power supply would boost industrial growth and create job opportunities. He advised the Power Department to improve consumer service ratings and implement reforms for financial viability and operational efficiency.

State Government’s Response

Chief Minister Pema Khandu thanked Manohar Lal for his visit and assured support for the power sector’s growth. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein expressed full support for hydro projects, aiming to complete 13 projects within timelines, contributing significantly to state revenue.

Future Plans

Detailed discussions covered hydropower generation, power transmission, and distribution. The State Government provided inputs and suggestions, focusing on meeting future energy demands and improving consumer services.

Transmission Sector

The meeting reviewed the “Comprehensive Scheme for Strengthening of Transmission & Distribution, Arunachal Pradesh” by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. Issues like Right of Way in Reserve Forest areas and downstream connectivity were addressed.

Distribution Sector

The State Government was urged to implement works under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to improve electricity supply quality and reliability. Smart Metering works were highlighted for better energy management and consumer empowerment.

Secretary (Power) emphasized the need to focus on growing energy demands and ensuring quality, reliable power at affordable rates.
