Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi Supports ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal

Patna (Bihar) [India], September 17: Union MSME Minister and leader of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) (HAM-S) Jitan Ram Manjhi praised the central government’s proposal to introduce ‘One Nation, One Election’ in the country. Speaking on Monday, he said, “This is very much needed and it should have happened earlier but it is happening now, for this, I thank the Government of India.”

Earlier, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah questioned the BJP-led government over its intention to implement the ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept in its present tenure. He asked how the government would bring various political parties on board for a suggestion with wide ramifications and several queries. Farooq Abdullah, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, said, “They (Centre) had a brute majority when they raised this issue. What was the motive? To set a precedent. This is a federal structure. Unity in diversity, that is India. How will they bring everyone on board? There is an election in our state but not in other states. Suppose my government fell and then they will put president rule till the next election comes. What is the motive behind this? Who are you fooling?”

Sources said on Sunday that the Bhartiya Janata Party-led government will continue to work on the agenda promised in 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was first sworn in as PM. The government is committed to holding simultaneous general and assembly elections. Sources also indicated that ‘One Nation, One Election’ will become a reality in this term of the government, and the BJP is hoping to muster support from other political parties as well.
