Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Highlights Progress at Barmer Refinery Project in Rajasthan

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared updates on the ongoing petroleum refinery project in Barmer, Rajasthan. In a social media post, the minister announced the installation of a huge dome roof for a Propylene Double Wall Tank at the Barmer site. This tank can store hazardous chemicals up to 200°F, with an inner tank for the substances and an outer tank as a protective barrier.

Minister Puri stated, “That’s the huge dome roof of the Propylene Double Wall Tank being airlifted in place at the Rajasthan Refinery Project at Barmer site. The total weight of the roof, including the suspended deck and balancing weights, is a massive 435MT. This is how India’s energy sector is shaping up for the future under the dynamic leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji.”

The Greenfield Refinery cum Petrochemical Complex at Barmer is being developed by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Government of Rajasthan, with stakes of 74% and 26% respectively. Conceived in 2008 and approved in 2013, the project commenced work in 2018 under the Prime Minister’s guidance.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the HRRL refinery complex will process 9 MMTPA of crude and produce over 2.4 million tons of petrochemicals, reducing import bills significantly. The project will serve as an anchor industry for an industrial hub in western Rajasthan and help India achieve its vision of 450 MMTPA refining capacity by 2030. It will also bring self-reliance in petrochemical imports, currently amounting to Rs 95000 crore, by reducing the import bill by Rs 26000 crore post-commissioning.

The project has engaged about 35,000 workers directly and around 1,00,000 workers indirectly, contributing to significant employment opportunities in the region.
