Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Responds to Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi’s Remarks on Emergency

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri reacted to Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi’s comments about an ‘undeclared emergency’ under the BJP-led government. Puri criticized Channi for not understanding the historical Emergency of 1975, stating, ‘Channi should read and gather knowledge of the history. You are a former CM of Punjab. You should meet the widows of the victims of 1984 riots.’

During a debate on the Budget 2024, Channi accused the government of curbing free speech, highlighting the jailing of MP Amritpal Singh and the killing of singer Sidhu Moose Wala. He stated, ‘This too is Emergency that a man who was elected as an MP by 20 lakh people in Punjab is behind bars under the NSA.’

Channi also mentioned other issues, such as central agencies working against opposition leaders, farmers being labeled as Khalistani, and the ongoing unrest in Manipur. Puri responded by emphasizing that the only attack on the Constitution was in June 1975.
