Union Minister Hardeep Puri Highlights Savings for Ujjwala Yojana Beneficiaries
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized the financial benefits that families receive from the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Speaking on social media, Puri noted that Ujjwala beneficiaries spend only around five rupees per day on cooking expenses, while non-Ujjwala households spend about 12 rupees per day.
Puri explained that Ujjwala beneficiaries get LPG cylinders at Rs 500, saving significantly compared to other cooking mediums. He highlighted the scheme’s impact on rural areas, where access to clean cooking fuel was previously limited.
The number of LPG connections in India surged from 14 crore in 2014 to over 33 crore in 2024, largely due to the Ujjwala Yojana. The scheme aims to provide LPG connections to underprivileged households, reducing their dependence on traditional fuels like firewood and coal.
Puri criticized the opposition for politicizing LPG prices, pointing out that there were no cylinders or Ujjwala Yojana during their time in power. He noted that 80% of Ujjwala beneficiaries come from rural areas, where traditional fuel use was higher before the scheme’s introduction.
