Union Minister Giriraj Singh Criticizes Congress Over 1975 Emergency

New Delhi [India], June 27: Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticized the Congress party for the 1975 Emergency, calling it the darkest chapter in India’s history. He stated that the new generation has the right to know about this period.

Speaking to reporters, Singh said, “The Constitution is the biggest power of the country and if anyone has hurt the Constitution, it has been the Congress party. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed an emergency in the country for her benefit and turned the country into a prison.”

He added, “Journalists were stopped from publishing, and political leaders were locked up in jails. The new generation has the right to know about the dark period.”

President Droupadi Murmu described the Emergency as the “biggest and darkest chapter” of a direct attack on the Constitution. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also condemned the Congress-led government’s decision to impose the Emergency and emphasized that future generations should be aware of it.

Opposition leaders dismissed the President’s address as a “script given by the government” and accused the current government of creating an “undeclared emergency.”

The Emergency, imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from June 25, 1975, to 1977, saw political arrests, mass forced sterilization, and censorship. Key opposition leaders, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, and Jay Prakash Narayanan, were jailed or detained during this period.
