Union Minister George Kurien Updates PM Modi on Wayanad Landslide Rescue Efforts
Union Minister George Kurien met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday to discuss the significant relief and rescue operations in Wayanad, Kerala, following landslides on July 30. The landslides in Chooralmala and Mundakkai have resulted in the loss of 308 lives.
Prime Minister Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. The rescue operations, now in their sixth day, involve over 1,300 forces. Wayanad District Collector Meghashree stated that the rescue efforts are in full swing, with volunteers also participating.
The Kerala Chief Minister’s Office has implemented night patrolling in the affected areas to prevent unauthorized access. The Indian Air Force has airlifted radars to aid the search operations, and the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Army, and Indian Air Force have successfully rescued stranded personnel.
As of the latest update, 215 bodies and 143 body parts have been recovered, with 148 bodies identified by relatives. Post-mortem procedures have been completed on 212 bodies and 140 body parts.
