Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat Criticizes Tejashwi Yadav’s Remark on Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Kamrup Metropolitan (Assam) [India], September 1: Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has called Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav’s comment on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ‘unfortunate’ and ‘racist’. Shekhawat stated that Yadav’s remark not only insulted Sarma but also disrespected the people of Northeast India and Assam. He demanded an apology from Yadav for his irresponsible statement.

Tejashwi Yadav had referred to CM Himanta as the ‘Chinese version of Yogi’ while criticizing the Assam Assembly’s decision to end the 2-hour Jumma practice on Fridays. RJD MP Manoj Jha defended Yadav’s remark, explaining that it was against the BJP’s dog-whistle politics and meant to highlight the lack of durability, similar to the term ‘Chinese maal’.

The Assam Assembly recently ended the practice of a two-hour adjournment for Jumma Prayers every Friday, a tradition introduced by Saadulah’s Muslim League government in colonial Assam. Assam Speaker Biswajit Daimary stated that the decision was made due to difficulties in holding discussions on Fridays. The new rule mandates that the Assembly will conduct its proceedings without any adjournment for religious purposes, starting at 9.30 am every day, including Fridays.
