Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Rahul Gandhi Clash Over Lateral Entry in Government Jobs

New Delhi, India – Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has defended the recent Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) notification for lateral entry posts, accusing the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) of hypocrisy. Vaishnaw stated that the UPA government originally developed the concept of lateral entry to recruit experts for specialized roles.

In a post on X, Vaishnaw emphasized that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has implemented this recommendation transparently through the UPSC. He argued that this reform would improve governance.

However, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi expressed concerns, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is appointing public servants through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) rather than the traditional UPSC route. Gandhi claimed this undermines the reservation rights of OBCs, SCs, and STs, and limits opportunities for underprivileged individuals.

Gandhi also raised concerns about corporate influence in government appointments, citing the recent appointment of SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch as an example. He vowed that the INDIA (Alliance) would strongly oppose this move, terming it as the ‘privatization of IAS’ and an attack on social justice.

This debate follows the Allahabad High Court’s directive to prepare a fresh selection list for 69,000 assistant teacher appointments in Uttar Pradesh, which Gandhi hailed as a victory for the reservation system.
