Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra Ensures Top Medical Services for Amarnath Pilgrims

New Delhi [India], July 13: Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra announced that a dedicated team of doctors from various AIIMS and Central Government Hospitals are providing medical services to Amarnath pilgrims. A unique ‘Pony Ambulance’ service has been introduced, where ponies carry oxygen cylinders along the Yatra track to help with breathing issues.

Medical Facilities and Staff

Chandra mentioned that well-equipped hospitals have been set up at base camps, including a 100-bed hospital in Chandanwari and Baltal. Nearly 250 doctors are available, working on a 20-day rotation basis, with 1000-2000 OPDs operational daily.

Oxygen Supply and Emergency Preparedness

Chandra highlighted the importance of oxygen supply, especially for elderly pilgrims. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare supports the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir in setting up medical camps and training staff for high-altitude emergencies.

Supreme Court Directives and EMR Division Efforts

Following Supreme Court directives, medical facilities are set up every two kilometers along the route. The Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) Division, led by L Swasticharan, has been working to streamline healthcare for the Yatra. In 2023, an on-site assessment ensured facilities met necessary standards.

National Level Review Meeting

The first-ever National Level Review Meeting for the Amarnath Yatra was held in December 2023 in Srinagar, chaired by Atul Goel, DGHS. Representatives from 12 States or UTs, AIIMS, and other institutions discussed challenges and planned for better medical care and coordination.

Deputation of Health Care Workers

Health care workers from 12 States or UTs and 16 institutions have been deputed in three shifts. The EMR Division, led by L Swasticharan, visited Kashmir in June 2024 to assess improvements in medical care and emergency preparedness.

Training and Monitoring

A training course on high-altitude medicine is being developed, with e-certificates for deployed staff. The EMR Division and DHS Kashmir team are continuously monitoring the Yatra for any emergencies.
