UNICEF Urges Pakistan to Address Air Pollution Threatening 11 Million Children in Punjab
In Islamabad, Pakistan, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) representative Abdullah Fadil has called on the Pakistan government to take urgent action to combat air pollution. This appeal comes as 11 million children in Punjab province are at risk due to toxic air. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Punjab has exceeded 400 in seven districts, with Sialkot reaching a staggering 774.
As a result of the poor air quality, schools have been closed until November 17, and residents are advised to avoid public parks, zoos, playgrounds, and museums to minimize exposure to smog. The air quality has reached record-breaking levels in Lahore and Multan, leading to hospitalizations, including many children.
Fadil expressed deep concern for the health of young children exposed to the polluted air, noting that over 11 million children under five are affected in the worst-hit areas. He highlighted that prior to these pollution levels, air pollution was already responsible for 12% of deaths in children under five in Pakistan.
Fadil also warned of the adverse effects on pregnant women, who may face complications such as premature births and respiratory issues due to the smog. He stressed the importance of ensuring clean air for children, emphasizing that their health, education, and well-being should not be compromised.
Fadil urged the Pakistan government to take immediate measures, asserting that every child has the right to breathe clean air.
