UN Investigates Attacks on Minorities in Bangladesh

In Dhaka, Bangladesh, the United Nations is looking into reported attacks on minority groups following a leadership change in August. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, visited Bangladesh and met with interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, among others. Türk stated, “Our fact-finding mission is investigating allegations of attacks against minorities between 5 and 15 August.” He emphasized the importance of holding perpetrators accountable to build trust with minority communities.

Earlier, the Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad (HBCOP) urged the UN to investigate communal violence against minorities. Türk highlighted the need for thorough investigations and fair trials, cautioning against hasty charges. Bangladesh authorities are considering international help to arrest former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her party leaders for alleged crimes during the July-August uprising. Türk warned against filing charges based solely on political affiliations.

Two months ago, a student-led movement ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, leading to an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus. The protests resulted in over 600 deaths, and Hasina fled to India on August 5.
