UN Hosts Donor Conference in Dubai

The United Nations organized a donor’s conference in Dubai to discuss aid for Afghanistan, which is under Taliban control and facing a severe humanitarian crisis. The conference, held on October 3, included domestic and international organizations and political representatives from various countries.

Focus on Humanitarian Support

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to providing humanitarian support to Afghanistan. They emphasized the need for creating conditions where Afghans can sustain themselves through employment rather than relying on international aid.

Challenges Under Taliban Rule

The conference addressed challenges posed by the Taliban’s “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” law, which imposes severe restrictions, especially on women. Women are not allowed to leave their homes without a male guardian, and their voices are considered indecent in public spaces.

Humanitarian Needs

According to UNHCR, over half of Afghanistan’s population, including women and girls, are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. An estimated 12.4 million people are expected to face acute food insecurity, with nearly 2.4 million at emergency hunger levels.

Concerns Over Aid Misuse

Some countries expressed concerns about the potential misuse of humanitarian aid by the Taliban. Karen Decker, the US Charge d’Affaires for Afghanistan, highlighted that the US has provided $2.3 billion in aid since the fall of the Afghan Republic.

India’s Support

India has been actively supporting Afghanistan by providing humanitarian assistance, including food and medicines. India advocates for an inclusive, Afghan-led peace process and emphasizes sustainable employment and self-sufficiency for Afghanistan’s future.
