UN Chief Antonio Guterres Urges End to Violence in Middle East After Israeli Airstrikes in Beirut
New York [US], September 29: United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the increasing violence in the Middle East. He has called for an immediate halt to the cycle of violence following Israeli airstrikes in Beirut that resulted in the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Guterres shared his concerns on X, stating, “I’m gravely concerned by the dramatic escalation of events in Beirut in the last 24 hours. This cycle of violence must stop now. All sides must step back from the brink.” He emphasized that the people of Lebanon, Israel, and the wider region cannot afford an all-out war.
UNICEF has also condemned the recent escalation, highlighting the tragic impact on children in Lebanon. In a post on X, UNICEF stated, “Tragedy upon tragedy in Lebanon. The recent escalation has killed and injured thousands and instilled an unimaginable fear in people. The children of Lebanon need an immediate de-escalation.”
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that they eliminated senior Hezbollah intelligence terrorist Hassan Khalil Yassin in a precision strike in Beirut’s Dahieh district. Yassin was responsible for identifying civilian and military targets and planning terror attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.
Hezbollah has acknowledged the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and vowed to continue its fight against Israel. The Israeli airstrikes led to civilian casualties, with Lebanon’s Health Ministry reporting at least six people killed and dozens injured.
Following the assassination of Nasrallah, Lebanon launched an attack on Israeli territory. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran’s Ayatollah regime, stating that those who target Israel will face consequences. He described Nasrallah as the “main engine of Iran’s axis of evil” and emphasized that Israel’s reach extends throughout the Middle East.
