UN Chief Antonio Guterres Calls for Inclusive Elections in Bangladesh

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called for parliamentary elections in Bangladesh and urged the interim government to make every effort to be inclusive. He emphasized the importance of including women and minority communities in the election process.

In a statement issued by Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, Guterres welcomed efforts to restore calm and organize elections with the support of an interim government. He urged the interim government to consider the voices of women, youth, and people across the country, as well as minority and indigenous communities.

Bangladesh is currently experiencing a volatile political situation. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 amid mounting protests, primarily led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs. These protests evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations.

On Tuesday, a clash occurred between Bangladesh Army personnel and members of the minority Hindu community protesting outside Jamuna State Guest House in Dhaka. The protesters were holding posters of their missing family members.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government, visited the historic Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka. He assured the minorities of their safety and security in the country. Following his visit, a significant meeting was held between representatives of the Muslim and Hindu communities at the temple to discuss various issues and work towards strengthening communal harmony.
