Raminder Ranger, a member of the UK House of Lords, has praised the meeting between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China’s President Xi Jinping as a significant step towards peace. The meeting took place during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, where both leaders discussed the importance of maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that peace and stability on the border should be a priority and that mutual trust should be the foundation of India-China relations. Ranger highlighted the historical context, recalling the ‘Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai’ sentiment and the 1962 conflict, urging that such events should not be repeated.

Former Indian diplomat Jayant Prasad also stressed the importance of normalizing relations between the two countries, noting their potential as leading global economies by 2050. He warned that poor relations could hinder development goals.

During the meeting, PM Modi reiterated the global significance of India-China relations for peace and progress. He welcomed the recent agreement on patrolling arrangements along the LAC and expressed hope for continued mutual respect and sensitivity in bilateral ties.

This meeting marked the first structured interaction between Modi and Xi in five years, following their last formal meeting in 2019 and brief encounters in 2022 and 2023.
