Udhayanidhi Stalin Becomes Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister

Chennai, Tamil Nadu [India], September 30: The DMK has fully supported the promotion of Udhayanidhi Stalin to the position of Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister. DMK leader TKS Elangovan stated on Monday that Udhayanidhi has gained enough experience to be worthy of this role. He said, “He has gained experience, performed very well in his ministry. He is accepted by the party and all senior leaders. There is nothing wrong with it.”

Elangovan added that senior party members and ministerial colleagues were demanding a larger official role for Udhayanidhi in the government. DMK allies Congress and VCK also welcomed his elevation. Congress’ K. Selvaperunthagai noted, “Many leaders in the BJP also have their sons and daughters serving as MLAs and MPs.” VCK Founder-President Thol. Thirumavalavan expressed his support, saying, “He will carry out his duties under the guidance of our Chief Minister. He is a capable individual, and he has performed well in his previous portfolio. We welcome his elevation to the role of Deputy CM.”

On Saturday, Tamil Nadu Sport Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister. Besides the existing Sports Ministry, Udhayanidhi has also been given the portfolio of Planning and Development. This marks the first time in the state’s history and the third time in India that a father-son duo will hold the posts of CM and Deputy CM, with the Badals in Punjab having done it previously.

Earlier, Chief Minister MK Stalin recommended to the Governor of Tamil Nadu, RN Ravi, to allot the portfolio of Planning and Development to Udhayanidhi, in addition to his existing portfolios, and designate him as Deputy Chief Minister. The Tamil Nadu CM also re-inducted former transport minister Senthil Balaji two days after he got bail in a money laundering case.

Regarding Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji, TKS Elangovan said, “ED and CBI have taken up a case which was already disposed off by the Chennai High Court. We feel that whatever happened with him is an attempt by the BJP to thwart DMK’s chances in the Western belt…BJP thinks that the Western belt is favourable to them but no district in Tamil Nadu is favourable to them.”
