UAE’s Abdulla Balalaa Joins UN Panel in Kenya to Discuss Critical Energy Transition Minerals

Abdulla Balalaa, UAE’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, participated at the United Nation’s Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM) Panel held in Nairobi, Kenya. The panel included government representatives, experts, and organizations who discussed important issues related to the mining sector since its launch in April 2024.

The UN CETM Panel focused on developing global voluntary guiding principles on critical minerals. During the meeting, members emphasized the need for stronger foundations and international cooperation to achieve mutual benefits in the mining industry. Balalaa praised the panel’s outcomes, highlighting the urgency to keep global temperatures within 1.5°C and the preparations for achieving net zero emissions.

Balalaa stressed the importance of sustainable policies and practices to protect local communities from environmental damage associated with mining. He also noted the significance of building wider confidence to achieve transformational outcomes, allowing mineral-rich countries to foster economic growth. Responsible investment in the mining sector was highlighted as crucial for supporting these countries and ensuring a smooth transition to renewable energy.

As part of the UAE’s climate action efforts, the country announced it will co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference with Senegal. This demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to providing innovative solutions to climate change and sustainability issues, including the preservation and efficient management of natural resources.
