UAE Urges Action to Address Famine Crisis in Sudan
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed deep concern over the severe food insecurity affecting over 25 million people in Sudan. The crisis is particularly dire in North Darfur, especially in Zamzam camp, which shelters over half a million displaced individuals. The UAE welcomes the UN Security Council’s meeting to address the famine situation in Sudan and calls for an emergency response to secure a ceasefire and facilitate the swift delivery of humanitarian aid.
Trucks loaded with lifesaving aid are currently held at the Sudanese border, while thousands of people, including those in Zamzam Camp and Northern Darfur, are starving. The UAE urges the Sudanese Armed Forces to lift restrictions on humanitarian access and calls on the Rapid Support Forces to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers.
The UAE condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of war and the denial of humanitarian access, which are violations of international humanitarian law. The UAE stresses the need for urgent cross-border and cross-line humanitarian access to save millions of lives and calls on the international community to prevent the people of Sudan from being used as political bargaining chips.
The UAE calls on the UN Security Council to take decisive action, including authorizing UN humanitarian agencies to reach those in need through cross-line and cross-border routes. The UAE also urges the warring parties in Sudan to agree to an immediate and permanent ceasefire, allow for the safe passage of humanitarian aid, and engage in peace talks for a civilian-led transition.
The UAE appreciates the efforts of the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland in organizing and co-hosting upcoming ceasefire talks. The UAE remains committed to supporting diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution and has allocated USD 70 million to address urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan and USD 30 million to support Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries.
