UAE Launches Emirates Polar Programme
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced a new polar research project to enhance its role in global polar research. This announcement was made during the UAE Government’s Annual Meetings 2024. Mariam Almheiri, who leads the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and chairs the UAE Polar Mission Steering Committee, shared details about the project.
Collaboration and Development
The project was developed over the past year with input from various UAE ministries, the National Centre of Meteorology, and Khalifa University. It aims to establish a Polar Research Centre at Khalifa University, build international partnerships, and join global polar missions.
Strategic Importance
Almheiri highlighted the UAE’s recognition of the strategic importance of polar science. The project seeks to prepare Emirati scientists for international missions, with two Emiratis set to embark on an Antarctic mission on November 7th, and another mission planned for the Arctic in 2025.
Commitment to Global Causes
The UAE is committed to inspiring future generations in science, building national scientific capacity, and supporting global climate action. The UAE Cabinet has approved signing all necessary international treaties for polar research.
Upcoming Missions
The UAE has been invited to participate in the Antarctica InSync program and the 33rd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. Khalifa University is also planning new polar research projects.
