The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has signed an important agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) to help Sudan avoid a famine. The agreement was signed by Sultan Al Shamsi from the UAE and Guangzhou Qu from the FAO at a special ceremony in New York.

The UAE is giving $5 million to a project called ‘Mitigating Famine in Sudan – Support to Conflict-Affected Vulnerable Smallholder Farming and Pastoralist Households.’ This project will run for one year and aims to help 275,000 smallholder farmer and pastoralist households, which is about 1,375,000 people.

The project will provide emergency crop, livestock, and veterinary assistance. It will also focus on helping women-headed households. The goal is to reduce livestock losses by vaccinating animals and deworming them, benefiting around 600,000 people.

Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs, said, “We must do everything in our power to halt a famine in Sudan. This contribution aims to achieve that by providing emergency agricultural support.”

AbdulHakim Elwaer, FAO Assistant Director-General, added, “We are grateful for the generous contribution from the UAE, which will significantly enhance our efforts to improve food and nutrition security in Sudan.”

This contribution is part of the UAE’s $70 million commitment announced in April to help Sudan and neighboring countries.
