A report by Arthur D Little (ADL) titled "The Planet Will See You Now" highlights the environmental challenges and opportunities in the Middle East's healthcare sector. ADL emphasizes the need for sustainable practices to address emissions, energy use, and waste.
The report aligns with national goals like the UAE's Net Zero 2050 vision and Saudi Arabia's Saudi Green Initiative. It highlights eco-friendly hospital designs, waste reduction programs, and supply chain optimization as key steps to decarbonize healthcare systems in the GCC. The healthcare sector in the UAE and Saudi Arabia is poised to lead the region's transition to a greener future.
Globally, healthcare systems contribute 4.4% of total greenhouse gas emissions, ranking as the fifth-largest emitter. In the Middle East, healthcare emissions are higher than the global average. Despite modern infrastructure, the region's hot climate increases energy needs for cooling, and medical waste management remains a challenge.
