U.S. Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland Meets Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te
On August 14, U.S. Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland, a member of the U.S. House Committee on Armed Services, met with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te in Taipei. Strickland highlighted the importance of deterrence in preventing potential Chinese aggression. She explained that the relationship between Taiwan and the U.S. has grown due to concerns about threats from across the Taiwan Strait.
Strickland stated, “We want to deter anything that will come across the strait and create a situation where we have to get involved in a conflict.” She emphasized that deterrence involves showing strength, power, and unity, and that democratic nations should unite to advocate for freedom and democracy.
Leading a delegation of Democrats from the House of Representatives, Strickland was joined by House members Julia Brownley, Jill Tokuda, and Jasmine Crockett, along with their aides. Strickland praised the strong partnership between Taiwan and the U.S., asserting the delegation’s steadfast support for Taiwan.
President Lai reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing Taiwan’s defense through military reforms and increased defense spending. He stated, “Security across the Taiwan Strait is crucial to global stability and prosperity.” Lai added that Taiwan aims to work with the U.S. and other allies to maintain peace and stability in the region.
Meanwhile, the Taiwan Ministry of Defence reported continued Chinese military activity around Taiwan, with 27 PLA aircraft and 12 PLAN vessels detected. The situation is being closely monitored and responded to accordingly.
