Typhoon Shanshan Hits Japan: Heavy Rain, Strong Winds, and Evacuations
On Thursday morning, Typhoon Shanshan made landfall on Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a rare special typhoon warning for most parts of Kagoshima Prefecture. Public transport operators canceled trains and flights due to the storm.
According to the prefectural governments of Kagoshima and Miyazaki, at least nine people were injured as of Wednesday. In central Japan, bullet train services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line between Shizuoka and Kakegawa were suspended due to heavy rainfall. In Aichi Prefecture, a landslide in the city of Gamagori resulted in three deaths and two injuries.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had asked authorities to provide timely and accurate information regarding evacuation, heavy rain, rainstorms, and river conditions. He emphasized the importance of working closely with local governments and taking all possible measures to support evacuations and ensure residents’ safety. The Prime Minister also instructed authorities to promptly assess the damage and implement disaster emergency measures if needed.
