Typhoon Gaemi Causes 8 Deaths and Many Injuries in Taiwan
At least eight people have died and 866 have been injured in Taiwan due to Typhoon Gaemi, according to the Central Emergency Operations Centre (CEOC). The typhoon, which has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, has moved to China but continues to bring heavy rain to parts of Taiwan.
Details of the Casualties
The casualties include:
- A 64-year-old female motorbiker hit by a falling tree in Kaohsiung.
- A 44-year-old woman killed by a fallen rooftop wall in Hualien County.
- A 78-year-old man killed during a landslide in Kaohsiung.
- A 65-year-old man who fell while repairing his home in Tainan.
- A 75-year-old scooter rider who collided with a fallen tree in Yulin County.
- Two unidentified bodies found in flooded fields in Chiayi County.
- An Alishan Forest Railway employee found dead in his car hit by falling rocks in Chiayi County.
Authorities are still searching for a 67-year-old man believed to have fallen into a culvert in Chiayi County’s Fanlu Township.
Injuries and Displacement
The highest number of injuries were reported in Kaohsiung (259), followed by Tainan (125) and Taichung (120). The CEOC has set up 279 emergency camps to house 1,232 displaced individuals. Nine sea vessels also sought Taiwan’s assistance during the typhoon.
