Two Big Earthquakes Hit Peru: 6.0 and 7.2 Magnitude Shakes
Two strong earthquakes struck Peru recently. A 6.0 magnitude quake hit near the coast on June 29, 2024, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The epicenter was located at Latitude 16.13 S and Longitude 74.59 W, at a depth of 60 kilometers. The earthquake occurred at 12:35 pm (IST). No casualties have been reported yet.
On June 28, 2024, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake jolted the southern coast of Peru, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This quake occurred 8 km west of Atiquipa at a depth of 28 km. The USGS stated that the earthquake was due to shallow thrust faulting on or near the boundary between the South America plate and the subducting Nazca plate.
