Tuticorin Airport in Tamil Nadu to Get Major Upgrades by December 2024

Tuticorin Airport in Tamil Nadu is undergoing a significant upgrade to better serve passengers and handle larger aircraft. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is investing Rs 381 crore in this project, which includes extending the runway, constructing a new terminal building, and adding other facilities.

Key Features of the Upgrade

  • Extension of the runway to 3,115 meters for A-321 aircraft
  • New terminal building spread over 17,500 square meters
  • Capacity to serve 1,440 passengers during peak hours and 20 lakh annually
  • Three aerobridges and modern passenger amenities
  • New ATC tower, fire station, and extended apron for parking five Airbus-321 aircraft

The project is expected to be completed by December 2024. M Suresh, Chairman of AAI, recently visited the site to review the progress. Currently, the airport serves 156 passengers during peak hours and three lakh annually, with connections to Chennai and Bengaluru.

Benefits of the Upgrade

The upgraded airport will not only meet the local community’s demand for better services but also promote trade and tourism in Tuticorin and nearby districts like Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, and Virudanagar.
