Tripura Tribal Council Forms Panel to Fix Voting and Boundary Issues
The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) has adopted a resolution to create a high-power committee. This committee will address boundary and voting issues in the sixth schedule areas, which include tribal regions in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.
Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia explained that the committee will visit problem areas and take steps to correct anomalies. The committee will also investigate voters who are enrolled in both Gram Panchayat and Village Committee electoral rolls.
During a one-day session, District Council member Dhirendra Debbarma raised the issue, leading to the decision to form the committee. Preliminary reports indicate around 3,500 voters have dual voting rights. The State Election Commission is preparing for panchayat elections, and the committee aims to resolve these issues before then.
A press statement from the TTAADC’s information and cultural affairs department noted that some villages were attached to general areas in 2010 without proper approval. The committee will seek to clarify these changes and finalize the TTAADC boundaries.
Jamatia mentioned that the issue had been raised before the poll panel for years without resolution. He believes that proper demarcation of the TTAADC boundaries will automatically resolve these issues. Three bills were passed during the session.
