Tripura Railway Police Arrests 434 Illegal Immigrants and Seizes Drugs

In the past 1.5 years, the Tripura Railway Police have detained 434 illegal immigrants from various railway stations and trains. These immigrants include Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya migrants.

Details of Arrests

SP Government Railway Police (GRP) Amitabha Paul shared that in 2023, 294 illegal immigrants were arrested, with 76 being Rohingyas. This year, 140 illegal immigrants have been detained so far, including three Rohingyas.

Border Touts and Cases

In addition to the immigrants, 77 Indian border touts were arrested over the same period. Last year, 51 touts were arrested, and this year, 26 have been detained. The total number of cases filed in connection with these detentions is 103.

Reasons for Influx

According to the testimonies of the arrested individuals, they cross the borders in search of work and use Tripura as a corridor to travel to metro cities. They often engage in petty jobs like rag picking, masonry, and construction work.

Drug Seizures

The GRP unit also seized substantial quantities of illicit drugs. In 2023, 239 drug peddlers were arrested, and 86 cases were registered. In 2024, 150 drug peddlers have been arrested so far, with 63 cases registered. The police seized over 2,300 kg of Ganja, 8,000 bottles of banned cough syrup, and 314 grams of heroin. Additionally, three individuals were arrested under the Arms Act for carrying a pistol on a train.
