Tripura Introduces New Criminal Laws and e-FIR System
On July 1, Tripura implemented new criminal laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. These laws replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
Key Features of the New Laws
District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar highlighted that the new laws are designed to be more victim-centric, incorporating videography, e-text, and emails as evidence. The laws also ensure timely delivery of judicial services.
e-FIR System
Superintendent of Police Dr. Kiran Kumar announced that e-FIR filing is now available in all 88 police stations in Tripura. Citizens can use any electronic device, such as a mobile phone or computer, to file an FIR. The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) will facilitate this process.

These laws received the President’s assent on December 25, 2023, and aim to modernize and streamline the criminal justice system in India.
