Tripura Faces Severe Flooding: 26 Dead, Thousands in Relief Camps
Agartala (Tripura) [India], August 26: The Tripura Directorate of Family Welfare and Preventive Medicine has advised the public to ensure safe drinking water due to the risk of contamination from severe flooding. The state has been hit by heavy rains, causing significant health risks and infrastructure damage.
Health Advisory
The department recommends consuming at least 5 litres of clean water daily for drinking and 20 litres for other needs. They advise boiling water and using bleach or chlorine tablets for purification. For clear water, add 1/8 teaspoon of bleach per gallon; for cloudy water, add 1/2 teaspoon. Store water in clean, covered containers and disinfect them regularly.
Relief Efforts
Three State Disaster Response Force (TSR) teams, five National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, and around 500 Civil Defence and Aapda Mitra volunteers are engaged in relief operations in the Gomati and Sepahijala districts. There are 471 relief camps sheltering over 70,000 people, with essential supplies being provided.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for the next two days, issuing a yellow alert for South Tripura District. The Public Welfare Department (PWD) reported severe damage to roads, bridges, and water resources, with an estimated cost of Rs1,825 crores for repairs.

The Tripura government has requested the central government to send an Inter-Ministerial Central Team for an on-site assessment of the damage. This team will assist in submitting a memorandum for additional support for restoration works.
