Tripura CM Manik Saha Announces More MBBS Seats at Agartala Medical College Amid NEET Controversy

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Friday that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase in MBBS intake capacity at Agartala Government Medical College from 100 to 150 seats. Saha shared this news on X, highlighting that this will provide more opportunities for aspiring medical students in the state.

He emphasized that the expansion of seats is expected to enhance access to healthcare services in the future. Saha stated, “Our government is committed to leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to improve the healthcare sector in the state.”

The announcement comes amid significant controversy over the conduct of NEET exams in India. Hundreds of students have protested against recent irregularities in NEET-UG 2024. The issue was raised in parliament, with opposition leaders demanding a discussion on the matter.

Congress MP KC Venugopal submitted an adjournment motion in Lok Sabha to discuss the unprecedented cases of paper leaks in exams, including NEET-UG and UGC NET, and the failure of the National Testing Agency (NTA). Aam Admi Party leader Sanjay Singh also gave a notice under Rule 267 to discuss the NEET issue in the Rajya Sabha.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the abolition of NEET and the restoration of the previous system of state-conducted exams. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a criminal case over the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the examination by the NTA and formed special teams to investigate the matter.
