Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Exit Macau Open in Semifinals
The Indian women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were defeated in the semifinals of the ongoing Macau Open badminton tournament. The duo, ranked 23rd in the world, lost to the Chinese Taipei pair of Hung En-Tzu and Hsieh Pei Shan, who are ranked 54th. The match ended with scores of 17-21, 21-16, 10-21.
The semifinal match started competitively, but Hung and Hsieh gained momentum and built a 13-8 lead in the first game. Although Treesa and Gayatri leveled the scores at 15-all, their opponents took the next six points to win the game. The Indian pair improved in the second game, winning it to set up a decider. However, the final game was one-sided in favor of the Chinese Taipei pair.
This is the third time this year that Hung and Hsieh have defeated Treesa and Gayatri in a BWF World Tour tournament. The Indian pair had previously won their first meeting at the US Open 2024 but lost in subsequent matches at the Canada Open, China Open, and now the Macau Open.
In other news, Kidambi Srikanth, who returned to the sport after an injury, also exited the Macau Open in the quarterfinals. He lost to Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long with scores of 21-16, 21-12. Kidambi, a former world number one and World Championships silver medalist, has struggled this year, failing to make it beyond the pre-quarterfinals in nine tournaments.
