Training on Plant Propagation and Cultivation at Kaziranga National Park
A special training session was held at Kohora in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, focusing on the propagation and cultivation of two important plant species: Schumannianthus dichotomus and Costus speciosus. These plants are valuable for their environmental benefits and economic potential.
Importance of the Plant Species
Schumannianthus dichotomus, also known as Patidoi, thrives in wetland areas and is a sustainable alternative to plastic, commonly used for making mats and woven products. Costus speciosus, or Jamlakhuti, is known for its medicinal and cosmetic properties and grows well in Assam. Both plants have significant carbon storage capabilities, aiding in climate change mitigation.
Organizers and Participants
The training was organized by the ICFRE-Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat, in collaboration with the State Forest Department and Assam Agroforestry Development Board. Dr. Prosanta Hazarika led the training, supported by Dr. Tajum Doni and Protul Hazarika. A total of 47 participants, including forest officials, farmers, and social workers, attended the event.
Training Highlights
During the training, participants learned about the propagation techniques for these plants, including site selection, soil conditions, and planting methods. Practical demonstrations were provided on preparing cuttings and using rooting hormones. The training aimed to enhance local livelihoods and promote sustainable practices.
Future Prospects
Field Director Sonali Ghosh emphasized the potential economic benefits for the local community, while Ritu Paban Borah encouraged participants to explore other bioresources. Dr. Arun Vignesh highlighted the training’s role in improving skills and creating opportunities for farmers. Two technical brochures were released, and plans for demo plantations are underway.
