On Friday evening, a serious train accident occurred at Kavarapettai station in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, when the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a stationary goods train. The collision led to the derailment of 12-13 coaches and injured at least 19 passengers.

Heavy rainfall on Saturday hampered the rescue operations, which were in full swing to restore the railway tracks. Railway officials estimated that it would take around 16 hours to complete the restoration work. The accident took place around 8:30 pm on the Chennai-Gudur section between Ponneri and Kavarapettai railway stations.

The Southern Railway set up help desks at Dr. MGR Chennai Central Railway Station to assist affected passengers. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that he was closely monitoring the situation and confirmed that the injured were taken to hospitals, with those seriously hurt being treated at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin visited the accident site and met with passengers at the hospital. A special train was arranged to carry stranded passengers from the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express, departing early Saturday morning from Dr. MGR Chennai Central railway station. Passengers were provided with food and water during their wait.

Drone visuals from the accident site showed extensive damage, highlighting the severity of the collision.
