The plane was en route from Cascavel in the Brazilian state of Parana to Guarulhos in Sao Paulo state. According to flight monitoring data, the plane descended 17,000 feet in less than a minute, although the reason for this rapid descent is still unknown.

The flight lost signal shortly after leaving Cascavel before 1:30 p.m. local time. The last data transmission from the plane was at 1:22 p.m. local time. Dramatic video footage of the crash shows the wrecked fuselage on fire.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has declared three days of mourning for the victims. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the crash.
