A devastating explosion caused by a methane gas leak at a coal mine in Tabas, Iran, has resulted in the deaths of at least 50 people and injured 20 others. The incident occurred on Saturday night, endangering 69 miners working in two blocks of the mine.

The explosion happened at 9:00pm (1730 GMT) on Saturday, affecting miners in blocks B and C. Rescue operations have started in block C, but the high methane density is making the process challenging and is expected to take around three to four hours.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. He stated that authorities, including the Ministers of Labor and Security, have been deployed to investigate the incident and provide assistance.
