Tragic Loss on Mount Dhaulagiri: Five Russian Climbers’ Bodies Retrieved
In a tragic event on Mount Dhaulagiri in Nepal, the bodies of five Russian climbers were successfully retrieved on October 16. The climbers, part of a 14-member Russian expedition, went missing on October 6 and were confirmed dead on October 8 at an altitude of 7,600 meters. Despite multiple attempts, their bodies were only recovered from 6,900 meters after ten days.
Rescue Mission Details
The retrieval mission was coordinated by Mingma Sherpa, a renowned climber, and involved a team including Senior Captain Bibek Khadka from Altitude Air, IFMGA guides Dawa Phinjo Bhote and Lakpa Bhote, and long-line rescue specialist Lokendra Dhami. The bodies were flown to Kathmandu for post-mortem at Tribhuvan University-Teaching Hospital.
Expedition Background
The climbers were part of a group that arrived in Kathmandu four weeks prior to the incident. The expedition was organized by IAM trekking agency, which released the names of the deceased: Aleksandr Dusheyko, Oleg Kruglov, Chistikov Vladimir, Nosenko Mikhail, and Shpilevoz Dmitri. The team lost contact with base camp officials on October 6 while at an altitude of 7,600 meters.
Earlier, Valerii Shamalo, a team member who abandoned the summit attempt, was rescued from Camp I. Denis Aleksenko from Russia and Artsiom Tsentsevitski from Belarus successfully scaled Dhaulagiri on October 5, while six others had abandoned their climb earlier.
